Using the Cable Guide
The cable guide is the main screen in Coax. It is where you browse channels, see what's on, and start watching.
How the screen is laid out
- The picture — the channel you are tuned to.
- The info pane beside it — the channel, the program and its episode or year, when it airs, its rating, resolution, and genres, the director and cast, and a summary (not on iPhone). Hide Info folds it away, and Show Info brings it back.
- The schedule grid below them — a row for each channel, with what is on now and what is coming up laid out against the time across the top.
The guide's controls sit with the info pane on iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, in a column to the right of the grid on Apple TV, and in the Control Panel, a window of their own, on the Mac. The guide's controls sit with the info pane. The guide's controls are in a column to the right of the grid. The guide's controls are in the Control Panel, a window of their own.
Browsing channels
Scroll the schedule grid up and down to move through your channels. Each row is one channel: the current program sits on the left, with upcoming programs extending to the right.
- Tap anywhere on a row, its number or any of its programs, to tune to that channel. You join what is on now, in progress, and the info pane follows.
- Tap the channel that is already playing to fill the screen with it.
What a program block tells you
Each block shows the program's title and its episode or year, and the one airing shows how far along it is. A block's width spans its scheduled time — so longer programs get wider blocks — and the program you are watching is highlighted.
To see how each stream reaches you, turn on Show Streaming Type: see The stream type indicator.
When the guide dims
After fifteen seconds without input, everything but the picture dims, so you can focus on what is playing. A touch, a click, a key, or a press on the remote brings it back, and so does scrolling the grid or changing the channel. On the Mac, moving the pointer doesn't. A touch brings it back, and so does scrolling the grid or changing the channel. A click or a key brings it back, and so does scrolling the grid or changing the channel. Moving the pointer doesn't. A press or a swipe on the remote brings it back. The guide doesn't dim on the Now Playing or Weather channels.
Audio and subtitles
Stream Options picks the audio and subtitle tracks for what is playing, and remembers your pick for that title. Where it is on each device and what else it holds is in Stream Options; how Coax picks a track on its own, and the three subtitle settings, in Audio and subtitle tracks.
Sleep timer
Sleep, with the moon, sets a timer that closes the guide and takes you back to the Lineups screen. It is in the guide's controls on iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro, and on the Info panel in Vision Pro's Multi-Window. On the Mac, choose a time from Sleep in the Control Panel or from Watch › Sleep Timer. Apple TV has no sleep timer. Sleep, with the moon, in the guide's controls, sets a timer that closes the guide and takes you back to the Lineups screen. In full screen it is along the top in the Modern and Sky themes, and the iPad's menu bar has Watch › Sleep Timer. Sleep, with the moon, in the guide's controls, sets a timer that closes the guide and takes you back to the Lineups screen. In Multi-Window it is on the Info panel; TV has no sleep timer. Choose a time from Sleep in the Control Panel or from Watch › Sleep Timer: 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, or the rest of the program. When it runs out, the guide closes and you are back at the Lineups screen. Apple TV has no sleep timer.
- The first press sets 10 minutes, or what is left of the program if that is less, and the button counts down.
- Press again within 5 seconds to step to 30 minutes, then 60, then off. When the program ends at some other time, that time is one of the steps.
- After 5 seconds, a press shows Cancel?; press once more to turn the timer off.
Full screen
Tap or click the picture, or the channel that is already playing, to fill the screen. Full Scrn in the guide's controls on iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro does it too, as does Full Screen in Apple TV's control column and in the Mac's Control Panel. How to change channels and get back to the guide is under each platform, below. Tap the picture, the channel that is already playing, or Full Scrn in the guide's controls to fill the screen. Click the picture, press Space, or click Full Screen in the Control Panel to open the picture in a window of its own. Choose Full Screen in the control column, or click the channel that is already playing, to fill the screen.
Full screen is unavailable once a trial has expired.
Refreshing the guide
There is no refresh inside the guide. To rebuild a lineup's schedule, with whatever you have just added to your server, use Refresh on its card on the Lineups screen. More in How refreshing works.
Platform-specific features
Each platform adds a few things of its own. This is what Apple TV adds. This is what the Mac adds. This is what iPhone and iPad add. This is what Apple Vision Pro adds.
On Apple TV
- In the guide, swipe or press up and down on the remote to move from channel to channel, and click to tune. Right moves to the control column. If you wander off, Back returns you to the channel that's playing.
- In full screen, up and down change the channel, and right opens Stream Options. Back first puts away what is over the picture, such as Stream Options or the channel's card, and then leaves full screen; left leaves it too.
- View Options, the A on the Lineups screen, holds the theme and text size: see Change the theme.
- Top Shelf shows what is on now in the Lineup you opened last, starting with the channel you watched last.
- An iPhone running Coax on the same network can see the TV's guide and change its channel.
- Leaving the app stops playback, unless Picture in Picture is running. Choose PiP in the guide's control column first, and the picture keeps playing over the rest of Apple TV.
On Mac
- Full Screen opens the picture in its own window. Drag it from anywhere on the picture. Close it, press Space or the left arrow, or click Bring Back in the guide to return.
- Arrow keys browse the guide without changing the channel. Type a channel number to tune to it.
- Window › Show Control Panel (⌥⌘C) floats the controls.
- The Watch menu holds Stream Options, Sleep Timer, and Power. The View menu switches themes.
- Every Coax intent is available in the Shortcuts app.
- The Mac is also a companion host for an iPhone on the same network.
On iPhone and iPad
- In full screen, swipe up and down to change channels. A tap shows the controls, and Back to Guide (in Retro, the channel number at the top left), a pinch, or the left arrow on a keyboard takes you back to the guide.
- Siri: "What's on Coax?", tune by name or number, flip up or down, what's next, captions on or off, stop Coax. All of it is in the Shortcuts app.
- Coax keeps playing when you switch apps, and Picture in Picture works.
- The iPhone is a companion remote for an Apple TV or Mac on the same network.
- Plug into a TV and the picture goes to the TV while the guide stays on the device. See On a TV from your iPhone or iPad.
- With a keyboard, the up and down arrows change the channel, in the guide and in full screen.
- The iPad's menu bar is close to the Mac's: the same Watch menu, and the View menu's themes and Picture in Picture, without the Mac's Multi-Window or Control Panel.
On a TV from your iPhone or iPad
Connect a USB-C or Lightning to HDMI adapter. Instead of mirroring your screen, Coax plays only the video on the TV, full screen and correctly proportioned. The guide stays on your device, which becomes the remote: change channels, open Stream Options, and pause from there. Nothing on the TV needs touching.
Playback is not interrupted when you connect or disconnect. The picture moves to the TV and back without a black frame, a rebuffer, or a lost position.
To watch on an Apple TV, run Coax on the Apple TV itself. One purchase covers it through Family Sharing, and your Lineups are already there through iCloud.
On Apple Vision Pro
- Every Play asks how to watch: Single Pane, with the player, the schedule, and the controls in one window; Multi-Window, with a window each for the video, the schedule, and the controls; or TV, a 21-inch television in your room with the guide in its own window.
- In Multi-Window, your Lineups and then the video sit in the middle. The Info panel on the left holds what's on, with Strm Opts, the theme, Sleep, and Pwr, and the schedule is on the right.
- Coax reuses your last choice only when it starts a Lineup on its own, as it does when it opens.
- In Single Pane the gestures match iPad, with look and pinch. In Multi-Window, swipe up and down on the video window to change channels; in TV, use the TV's remote or the guide window.
