Parental Controls

Coax can restrict content by age group, hide whole lineups, and put the settings themselves behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a PIN.

Getting to parental controls

  • On iPhone, iPad, or Mac: open Settings › Parental Controls. On iPhone and iPad, Settings is the gear on the lineups screen; on the Mac, choose Coax › Settings… or click Settings in the toolbar. If the controls are locked, choose Unlock Parental Controls and use Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  • On Apple TV: open Settings › Parental Controls from the gear on the lineups screen. If a PIN is set, choose Unlock Parental Controls and enter your four-digit PIN.
  • On Apple Vision Pro: choose Parental Controls from the A menu on the lineups screen. If the controls are locked, you will be asked for Optic ID or your passcode.

While an age limit is in effect, the parental controls notice on the lineups screen opens them too. Controls lock themselves whenever the app goes to the background.

Forgotten your PIN? There is no PIN recovery, and signing out of your server does not reset it. Email relaxwithcoax@gmail.com and I'll help.

Setting a household rating ceiling

In parental controls, Age Limit, under Maximum Age Group, is an upper limit that applies across every lineup. Choose Off, Younger Kids, Older Kids, or Teens, and nothing rated above that level appears in any of your guides.

The limit that actually applies is always the strictest one in play:

  • The Age Limit you set here.
  • On Plex, any restriction set on the server for the managed user you have switched to.
  • Each lineup's own Maximum Age Group.

A permissive lineup can never show content above the household limit. The strictest setting always wins.

How age groups map to ratings

Content on your server can carry ratings from several countries' systems at once, so Coax uses age groups to keep things simple and consistent. Each group covers the equivalent ratings across the US, UK, and Australian systems automatically — Teens, for instance, allows up to PG-13 and TV-14 in the US, 15 in the UK, and M in Australia.

Items with no rating are hidden under any age limit, so if you set one, fill in the ratings on your server.

Per-lineup rating limits

Each lineup can carry its own Minimum Age Group and Maximum Age Group, independent of the others. You might allow everything in your main lineup while keeping a Family lineup at Older Kids and below.

To set them, open the lineup's Configure and look for Content Filters. One pair of age-group settings covers both movies and TV shows.

Hidden lineups

When a household Age Limit is set, any lineup whose own age-group setting is looser than that limit disappears from the lineups screen automatically, and a notice on that screen shows parental controls are in effect.

Lineups with no age-group setting of their own stay visible, but their content is still filtered to the active limit when the schedule is built.

Locking the controls

  • On iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro: turn on Lock Parental Controls. Opening parental controls then requires Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, or your device passcode.
  • On Apple TV: use Set Up PIN Lock to protect them with a four-digit PIN. You can change or remove the PIN from the same screen.

While parental controls are locked, nobody can:

  • Change any age-group setting
  • See hidden lineups
  • Reach any content above the active age-group limit
